Stories are an integral part of any society. A human being listens to stories from grandparents in childhood. Later, when he goes to school , he reads stories in his syllabus books. And as an adult whether he watches a movie, a TV Serial or reads a novel, they all have a story.

The reason why stories are crucial to survival is that they give us lessons. They make us ponder on our actions and behaviors. Also, they have the power to teach us values and morals of life.

Expressive Himani's short inspiring stories is one such initiative to arise and awaken young minds. The purpose of stories posted here is to inspire the reader for taking positive action which is fruitful for both himself/herself and the society at large.

Also, at the end of every story, one or more thought provoking questions are asked which you can answer willingly in the comment section.

Riki and Piki

Riki was a very clever fox living in the middle of a jungle. He would eat away both, plants and animals. A cuckoo named Piki, with very beautiful voice also lived in the same jungle.
It was the spring season. Piki was sitting on a branch of Mango tree, enjoying the aroma of ripe mangoes. She felt like singing and started cooing in her melodious voice.
Riki was passing from there. He had learnt about ripe mangoes from other animals. He felt himself lucky to find both ripe mangoes and Piki at same time.

But both were out of his reach. The mangoes were very high and Piki was also sitting on a high branch. He thought of a plan and approached Piki.

He praised Piki for her mesmerising voice. Piki was already aware of Riki's cleverness. But she wondered why Riki was praising her. Riki asked her for a deal that if she would pluck a mango with her beak and drop near him, he would never prey on any cuckoo from then. Piki became alert. She did not reply to Riki.

Riki again said that cuckoo was very innocent and kind hearted. He said that all animals including him liked her a lot. He said that he believed that she considered him a friend. Piki did not reply to him, again.

Riki said that he was very sad as Piki was not talking to him. He said that he was going. Piki thought of teaching him a lesson.
She said that she agreed to his proposal. She picked a mango from her beak and dropped it to a distance away from Riki and she, herself sat on the ground at reasonable distance from Riki and the mango.

Riki thought that his plan was heading towards success. He thought that he will first catch her and then the mango. He headed towards the direction of mango but suddenly jumped to catch Piki, who had already flown away just before his jump. Riki felt decieved. He, then thought that he could atleast have mango. But Piki readily picked it with her beak and flew to the top branch of tree.

Now, Riki had lost both the mango and Piki's trust. He could not say anything to Piki then. He was caught in his own trap. Piki already knew him. But she wanted him to realize and learn a lesson.

IF RIKI HAD NOT JUMPED TO CATCH PIKI, HE COULD HAVE A SWEET MANGO FOR THE DAY. AND MAYBE, PIKI WOULD GIVE HIM MORE AT TIMES. BUT BECAUSE OF HIS OVER CLEVERNESS, HE LOST EVERYTHING. DO YOU THINK HONESTY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN CLEVERNESS?
